An astonishing adventure into a parallel world deep beneath the surface of the Earth. Five explorers take us on an exclusive journey into one of the most challenging caves in the world. The ‘Giant Thing’ is Germany’s largest and best known shaft cave high in the Bavarian mountains.

The entrance of the cave drops nearly one thousand metres down breathtakingly steep walls- higher than the highest church tower in the world.

The caver’s mission is clear: find the exit of the cave (if there is one) in this magical world 20,000 metres below ground. The search takes many days through bizarre and extraordinary scenery evoking images from The Lord of the Rings or the tales of Jules Verne.

The Giant Thing received worldwide attention in 2014 when one of the explorers sustained a serious rock fall. International news coverage over those two weeks covered the rescue. One of the most elaborate cave rescue operations ever carried out in Europe.
