At the turn of the 19th century, a struggle for influence was taking place in the Slovenian mountains between the Slovenian Mountaineering Society and the German societies, against the nationally oppressive activities of the Alpenverein. This conflict has spread through mountaineering to the highest peaks, especially for the championship of the North Triglav Wall, where the young and daring »Skalaši« play a major role. Through the efforts of the Skala Alpine Club, the race for the wall championship between Slovenian and foreign climbers was won.
Joža Čop, the little illiterate man of the people, won deep respect and admiration of the entire Slovenian intellectual elite, as well as of his contemporaries and all later generations of Slovenians. He was a role model for the Skala Club members, but most of all, he was a role model for the entire later generation of young mountaineers.
Nevertheless, he says: “I never climbed for fame and newspapers, so that people could wipe their asses with me.”
The film is also the story of the cradle, the birth, and the beginnings of the formation of the Slovenian intellectual and sporting elite.
Director's statement:
The duration and passage of living memory is a special miracle in itself, proving how close and far we actually are, regardless of the decades and even centuries that stand between us
